Dr. Alfred Biolek
On June 10th 2003, Alfred Biolek hosted his popular chat show "Boulevard Bio" for the last time. After 12 years and 485 shows, the famous television presenter decided to switch off his microphone and devote even more time to his activities as UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador.
Under the theme of "Hope," his last show featured Verona Feldbusch, the German television host, Barbara Becker, ex-wife of former tennis player Boris Becker and Thomas Quasthoff, the well-known tenor singer and several young people from South Africa and Kenya.
The South African boy band "The Sentinentals" compose and perform songs with which they aim to give people hope and a positive attitude towards life. In a country which is threatened by HIV/AIDS, this is vital for successful work in the field of health. Zweli Dlomo, one of the three members of the group, talked about the health situation in South Africa and his commitment towards helping young people live a positive lifestyle.
Mercy Nzioki, who met Biolek on his recent trip to Kenya and Uganda, works as a peer educator, teaching other young people how to protect themselves against unwanted pregnancies and HIV/AIDS. Mercy also gave an overview of her work and stressed its importance for young people living in Nairobi.
Dr. Biolek repeatedly stressed how seriously he takes his work as Goodwill Ambassador. In front of an audience of 2.5m viewers, he announced that people can “buy” him as a host or a cook - so long as they make a donation to youth education projects in Africa.
His last Boulevard Show was broadcast on 6 additional regional TV channels reaching, in total, about 8 million people or about 10% of the German public.
